It appears as though the Jacksonville Jaguars have decided their backup quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence for this upcoming season.
The Jacksonville Jaguars decided to release veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard, which as Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk points out, means that he has lost the backup quarterback battle with Mac Jones, who is remaining on the roster.
“The Jaguars have announced all of the moves they made to get down to 53 players and they include one that settled the question of their backup quarterback,” Alper wrote for Pro Football Talk on Tuesday.
“Mac Jones and C.J. Beathard were battling for the job this summer and Jones is the only one who has made it through cutdown day. Beathard has been released with an injury settlement — he’s been dealing with a groin injury — on Tuesday.”
Beathard was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft where he spent the first four years of his career, starting 12 games for the Niners over that span. Beathard signed with the Jaguars ahead of the 2021 season where he has served as the backup to Trevor Lawrence throughout his time in Jacksonville.
We’ll have to see where he lands next.
