The Carolina Panthers cleaned house at the wide receiver position over the offseason and entered 2014 with an array of mediocre veterans and one rookie that had the pedigree of a legitimate No. 1 target for Cam Newton for the next decade. Many fantasy owners were unsure what to expect from former Florida State wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin therefore proceeded with caution, with him slipping past the 8th round in many leagues, but it appears the investment is paying off.
He has received no less than eight targets in each of Carolina’s six games and while his season stats aren’t eye-popping, Benjamin has reeled in four TDs along with 416 yards on 31 catches (55 targets). He faces a banged up Green Bay Packers secondary in Week 7 that could be without their top two corners in Sam Shields (knee) and Tramon Williams (foot/ankle). Dom Capers’ unit has struggled mightily against the read-option offense and big, physical pass catchers therefore Benjamin appears poised for his biggest game since Week 3 when he had a career-high 115 yards and a score. Assuming he shakes off a late-game concussion from Week 6, he sneaks into the top 10 of the wide receiver rankings this week.
