Only the diehards actually knew who Malcolm Butler was before Super Bowl XLIX and despite making one of the biggest plays in Super Bowl history, a whole heap of people still have no idea who Malcolm Butler is. The Patriots defensive back managed to jump on Russell Wilson’s slant throw to Ricardo Lockette and wrap up the Patriots fourth title. In doing so, he immediately became a legendary hero for New England fans.
Unfortunately it appears that Butler will not only be doing some celebrating after his interception but he will be doing some clarifying. Malcolm Butler is not Darius Butler. Darius Butler is a cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts. Darius Butler did not play in the Super Bowl. He did not intercept Russell Wilson and his first name is not even remotely close to Malcolm. However, he has zero interest in telling oblivious non-fans all of those details.
Side note: It’s unclear if the same fans are attempting to congratulate Mike Brady of the Brady Bunch as opposed to their quarterback Tom Brady.
The non-Patriots Butler received a shockingly high number of Twitter mentions following the Super Bowl but instead of directing those folks in the direction of the real Malcolm Butler, he elected to play along with some of the following responses:
