Cam Newton made an interesting comment following the Panthers’ win over over the Saints on Sunday. The fifth-year quarterback was seeking an unnecessary roughness flag from veteran referee Ed Hochuli but was denied, with Hochuli supposedly telling Newton that he’s “not old enough” to receive that call.
Video of the incident clearly shows the exchange and Newton’s baffled reaction to something from the brief conversation but it’s unclear what exactly came out of Hochuli’s mouth. Hochuli is flat out denying he made the comment.
“He told me that he said, ‘The difference is you were running,'” Dean Blandino, NFL vice president of officiating, said. “I think when you look at the tape it does look like Ed did say that … at one point. You can’t see everything that Ed says, but he’s adamant he didn’t say it and I think that’s where we are right now and we’re just going to kind of move on from there.”
Blandino continued, saying the league will do an investigation of the matter to determine if anything inappropriate or unprofessional was said.
“We would do an investigation, see if anybody was miked in the area, and we’ve had situations in the past where an official said something inappropriate to a player and we’ve disciplined them. So there is a process in place, and we would have to go through that process to see if we could pick up what was actually said.”
