Like many other teams, the Philadelphia Eagles are currently in the process of trimming their roster down to 53 players before Tuesday’s deadline.
And on Monday, the Eagles made a series of moves aimed at doing just that, releasing four players, including veteran quarterback Will Grier.
Philadelphia had initially acquired the former Florida and West Virginia quarterback as a free agent this past offseason after he spent portions of the 2023 campaign with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers. Appearing in two preseason games with the Eagles, he completed seven of his 11 pass attempts for 51 yards.
Grier’s release hardly comes as a surprise, as he was clearly facing an uphill battle to make a Philadelphia roster that also includes Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee at quarterback. After originally being selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the 2018 second-team All-Big 12 selection spent time with the Panthers (2019-2020), Dallas Cowboys (2021-2022), Cincinnati Bengals (2023 offseason), Patriots and Chargers before signing with the Eagles this past offseason.
In addition to Grier, Philadelphia released defensive back Parry Nickerson, outside linebacker Julian Okwara, and offensive guard Max Scharping as a part of Monday’s roster moves. The Eagles will open their 2024 season on Friday, Sept. 6 when they face the Green Bay Packers in Brazil.
