For over two decades, the New England Patriots were spoiled by having the most accomplished quarterback in NFL history leading the way for the team with Tom Brady serving as their starting quarterback. That sort of legacy could make it hard for anybody to follow, and new rookie quarterback Drake Maye addressed that during a recent interview.
After Drake Maye was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Patriots, he made it very clear that he will not be comparing himself to Tom Brady as he steps into his new career with the Patriots.
“Tom Brady’s the G.O.A.T.,” Maye said in his post-draft news conference according to NFL.com. “It’s easy to say that. He’s the best that ever played this game. I’m not going to be Tom Brady. So, I’m just going to try to be Drake Maye, and from there, I’m just trying to learn from him, hopefully get to know him a little bit. Other than that, just try to soak it up, be a sponge and try to learn all I can from him. He’s the man of that town.”
The good news for Maye as that the team won’t be looking for him to be Brady, they’ll just be looking for him to be better than Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe, which is a far more manageable task.
