The New England Patriots selected former North Carolina Tar Heels star quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft obviously in hopes that he could be their franchise quarterback of the future. And based on some recent comments from head coach Jerod Mayo, it sounds like things are certainly headed in that direction even if they aren’t quite there yet.

During a recent interview, Jerod Mayo was asked about the current progress from Drake Maye and he certainly didn’t hold back his honest assessment of the situation, making it clear that while Maye is not exactly where they want him to be just yet, he’s “going the right direction” in terms of his development and getting a little bit better every day.

“Yeah, he’s done a great job,” Mayo responded, asked how happy he is with Maye’s growth this spring, according to On3. “He’s going the right direction. Now, in saying that, we know there’s going to be some down days, and that’s one thing that I’ve been trying to stress to him is, ‘Alright, just keep chipping at the rock. Get 1% better every day.’ It’s not always going to be great, and he’s done a good job.”

Maye is competing with veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the team’s starting quarterback role this offseason. While fans obviously want to see what Maye can do on the field, it doesn’t sound like the Patriots are going to rush his development.
