Just a couple of months ago, Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver Devonta Smith signed what appeared to be a lucrative contract extension with the team. After a few other top receivers signed new contracts since then, Smith’s deal suddenly does not look all that impressive. But it sounds like he’s still quite content.
Eagles teammate A.J. Brown, Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle have all since signed more lucrative deals than Devonta Smith and Justin Jefferson just topped them all with the most lucrative contract ever given to a non-quarterback.
Needless to say, the market has changed a lot since Smith signed his contract just a couple of months ago. Had he waited, he likely would have made significantly more money. It’s a pretty brutal situation, but he’s not thinking about it like that.
“You can’t be counting the pockets of others,” Smith said according to CBS Philadelphia. “I’m where I want to be. This is where I wanted to be. At the end of the day, it was still life-changing for me. Those guys that got their deals, they deserve it. Great players and great people. At the end of the day, we’re all blessed.”
Smith is happy with the contract he signed, but it undeniably could have been more.
