It sounds like the Dallas Cowboys will have a new head coach when they begin the 2024-25 season.
According to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, head coach Mike McCarthy will not return as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season.
“Sources: Mike McCarthy is out as #Cowboys coach. The sides couldn’t agree on length of contract and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities. He leaves Dallas with a winning record and three playoff appearances,” Pelissero said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
McCarthy entered the 2024-25 season with just one year remaining on his contract after the Cowboys declined to offer him a contract extension during the offseason.
While both sides seemed open to McCarthy returning to the Cowboys on a new contract this offseason, those negotiations ultimately failed and the Cowboys will now be looking for a new head coach.
“The Cowboys and Mike McCarthy had positive discussions last week about the 2024 season and the future. But McCarthy’s contract was set to expire Tuesday and the sides couldn’t work out a deal. Now Dallas needs a new coach and McCarthy is expected to have interest elsewhere,” Pelissero wrote in a follow-up post.
McCarthy went 49-35 during his time with the Cowboys. He had three straight 12-win seasons from 2021-2023, but only led the team to just one playoff victory over that span. The Cowboys finished just 7-10 this year as a result of a number of injuries, including one to starting quarterback Dak Prescott.
It’s not clear who the Cowboys will target to replace McCarthy, but it is clear that there will be a new leader on the sidelines next season.
