2024 was a season that the Dallas Cowboys are looking to put into the rearview mirror as soon as possible. Dallas entered the season brimming with hope after securing arguably its two biggest stars, quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to enormous contract extensions before the start of the campaign.

Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last long. Injuries derailed the Cowboys season, including a season-ending hamstring injury to Prescott.

Even with the impact injuries had on Dallas’ season, many fans, experts, and pundits felt as if head coach Mike McCarthy did not do enough to consistently put the team in a position to win, and that it was in the franchise’s best interest to move on from after the conclusion of the season after his contract was up.

Now, one prominent NFL insider is reporting on how the Cowboys plan on moving forward regarding their head coach.

After several days of discussions about the 2024 season and the future, (Cowboys) owner Jerry Jones and coach Mike McCarthy remain open to moving forward together and the sides are expected to open talks today on a new contract to keep him in Dallas, per sources.

“There have been no negotiations yet and still are other issues to work through. McCarthy’s contract is set to expire Tuesday, giving Dallas a few more days to work out a deal. Otherwise, McCarthy would be free to pursue other opportunities,” reported Tom Pelissero on Friday.

Pelissero then followed this up with an update on the time crunch both sides are dealing with.

Time is of the essence now for both sides as they move to the business phase: Virtually all the (Cowboys) assistant coaches also would be free to take other jobs starting next Tuesday, and Mike McCarthy will need time to assemble his staff, whether in Dallas or elsewhere.”

It’ll be interesting to see if the two sides manage to arrive at a deal.
