The Dallas Cowboys’ miserable 2024 season ended on Sunday. For Mike McCarthy, he hopes this isn’t the final go.
Naturally, Dallas couldn’t go without one last slip-up, as the undermanned Washington Commanders took them down in the final moments. Marcus Mariota found Terry McLaurin, an Oregon to Ohio State connection, to lift the Commanders over the Cowboys.
It was no Monday Night Miracle, but a stunning result nonetheless.
Questions have circulated about McCarthy and his status with the team going forward. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn’t made a decision yet and doesn’t appear to be in any rush to. So right now, it’s anybody’s guess whether the former Super Bowl-winning coach is set to remain with the team.
After the game, McCarthy fielded questions. One reporter asked the Cowboys coach on if he wants to be retained for the 2025 NFL season.
“Absolutely,” McCarthy emphatically said via Pro Football Talk.
The Cowboys coach continued. “I have a lot invested here, and the Cowboys have a lot invested in me. And then there’s a personal side to all these decisions. They all point the right direction. I think anytime you invest your time, energy, your belief, the connection you have, the relationships that are in place here, the understanding of what the organization can do and is willing to do. Those are all positive attributes that you take into account.
“But you know, absolutely,” he once again made clear. “I’m a builder. I believe in building programs. I believe in developing young players. So, at the end of day, it is about winning and you have to have those components in place to get this thing where it needs to be. I think we have a very good foundation here.”
McCarthy is 49-35 overall in Dallas since the 2020 season. That included three postseason trips, but all three had the same result: Losses. And more importantly, the Cowboys fell short of the NFC Championship Game under McCarthy, a destination they haven’t reached since the 1995-96 season. McCarthy won a Super Bowl in Green Bay, and his career coaching record is 174-111-2.
