The Dallas Cowboys announced last week that Mike McCarthy will remain as the team’s head coach despite another postseason failure as the team was bounced in the Wild Card round by the Green Bay Packers. But even though team owner Jerry Jones seems to have enough confidence to bring him back for another season, it will not come with a contract extension.

According to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys are not expected to give Mike McCarthy a contract extension this offseason as he heads into the final season on his contract.

“Ever since Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced this week that McCarthy would return in 2024, there have been questions about whether McCarthy’s contract could be adjusted in some way — even something as simple as having one more year tacked on,” Schefter wrote for ESPN on Saturday.

“The answer, simply enough, is no. Jones said he believes that a person in the last year of a contract is challenged in a different way, and it often can bring out the best in people — which he is banking on happening in 2024 with McCarthy.”

If it wasn’t clear already that McCarthy will be coaching for his job next season, this move sends a pretty clear message that this will be the case.

Obviously, it’s a harsh decision from the Cowboys. We’ll have to see how McCarthy responds to the pressure.
