The New England Patriots never quite put things together under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. Despite an emerging All-Pro caliber player in young cornerback Christian Gonzalez and flashes shown from rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the Pats finished the year 4-13, good for last place in the AFC East.
Mayo was relieved of his duties shortly after the conclusion of the season, in a move that stunned many, considering he was only allotted one year to show that he had what it took to succeed.
Gonzalez spoke with media members on Monday about the situation, and although he said all of the right things, in a clip that is making the rounds on social media, Gonzalez is smirking and smiling when discussing Mayo’s dismissal.
#Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez on Jerod Mayo being fired:
"I love Jerod, I love playing for him. But y’all know, none of us have no say on that… we gotta just cherish the moments we had with him."

Fans reacted to Gonzalez’s response to the situation on social media.
“The smirk tells me everything,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“The smile says it all 🙂 bye bye jerod,” another fan added.
“He smiling in every sentence lol,” one fan added.
“He seems happy. Mayo lost the locker room several weeks ago and the play on the field proved it,” observed another fan.
It’ll be interesting to see if the next person brought in to steer the ship in New England does a better job of keeping the locker room together.
