As the Kansas City Chiefs look to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, they’re making a surprising move at quarterback.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Chiefs are signing veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz to a one-year deal. The 31-year-old Wentz spent a portion of last season playing with the Los Angeles Rams, appearing in two games (one start).
Originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, the North Dakota State product’s professional career got off to a promising start as he earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors during the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning season in 2017. Injuries and inconsistencies, however, derailed his time in Philadelphia and he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2021 season.
After spending the 2021 season with the Colts and the 2022 season with the Washington Commanders, Wentz went from starter to un-signed until the Rams added him to their roster as a backup midway through the 2023 campaign. In joining the Chiefs, the 5-time FCS champion will take on a similar role, as he is currently positioned to serve as two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes’ top understudy as Kansas City looks to defend its Super Bowl title for a second straight season.
