As the Kansas City Chiefs look to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowl championships, one of their star players is now battling an injury.
According to Chiefs Wire, All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones missed Sunday’s training camp practice due to a groin injury. A specific injury has yet to be announced, with Kansas City head coach Andy Reid noting that the Mississippi State product’s groin was “sore.”
“We’ll see. I mean, I know he was messing with you guys,” Reid said, referring to comments Jones had made earlier in training camp about wanting more rest days. “But he does have a sore groin.”
Fortunately for Kansas City, it doesn’t appear Jones’ injury is serious. But should the 30-year-old miss any time this season, it could prove significant considering his status as the Chiefs’ top defensive player.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Jones has earned five Pro Bowl and five All-Pro selections over the course of his first eight seasons in Kansas City. In that span, he has anchored three Super Bowl-winning defenses, while tallying 75.5 sacks over the course of his career.
After hitting free agency following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason, Jones re-signed with Kansas City on a five-year, $158.75 million contract. The new deal makes Jones the highest paid player at his position, both in terms of total value and on an yearly basis.
