Three weeks ago, Champ Bailey announced that he would be retiring from the NFL after a long and fruitful career terrorizing NFL passers and receivers. The twelve time Pro Bowler and five time All-Pro spent the 10 seasons with the Denver Broncos. His previous five years in the league were spent in Washington. He had signed with the New Orleans Saints over the offseason but he didn’t make the final roster. Seeing as how it wouldn’t have been right for Champ’s final NFL moments to be in a Saints’ practice squad uniform, the Broncos wanted to ensure that Bailey would retire with his real NFL home.
While the Broncos had wanted to give Champ a ceremony to celebrate his career when he announced his retirement earlier this month, Denver’s schedule didn’t align with that goal as the team has been on the road the past three weeks.
So, on Tuesday, Champ showed up for a ceremonial one-day signing to put the final exclamation point on his excellent career. We wish him the best in his post-NFL career. If it’s anywhere near as successful as Champ’s playing days, the world had better watch out.
In perhaps Champ Bailey's greatest season, 2006, QBs threw at him only 35 times. He intercepted 10 of those, allowing only 4 receptions.
