Last month, the Chicago Bears selected former USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and quickly named him their starting quarterback before he had even practiced with the team. But unfortunately for Williams and the Bears, things do not seem to be going as well as they likely would have hoped.
According to a report from Chicago Bears beat writer Nicholas Moreano on Thursday, Caleb Williams really struggled during the team’s 7-on-7 practice period.
“Really rough day for Caleb Williams and the starting offense. A lot of incomplete passes and near interceptions,” Moreano said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

“In the 7-on-7 period, Williams completed just three passes. Jaylon Johnson nearly had an interception over the middle of the field,” Moreano continued. “In the team period, most of the passes were completed to the flat, and Williams held onto the ball for a long time.”
The struggles from Williams prompted Bears head coach Matt Eberflus to offer his reaction during his press conference later in the day.
“This is the first time going against a pro defense, and a pretty good one,” Eberflus said. “It’s going to be learning for everybody. They’re getting everything together. It was progress. I saw progress from the first day to the second, the second to the third. So it’s good.”
Eberflus also noted that the team is putting a lot on Williams’ shoulders as he tries to learn the offense and get comfortable in the NFL.
“We’re not holding back,” Eberflus said. “We’re giving him a lot of information. We’re giving him the offense and you want to be able to go through the whole offense before the off-season gets done, primarily most of it, and work it into the summer.”
We’ll have to see how Williams bounces back from this.
