As it turns out, Russell Wilson isn’t the only high profile player that the Denver Broncos are parting ways with this offseason.
On Thursday, the Broncos announced that they are releasing safety Justin Simmons. Originally selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Boston College product has been a staple of the Denver defense for the past eight seasons, earning four second-team All-Pro selections in addition to twice being named to the Pro Bowl.
While the Broncos didn’t enjoy much success with Simmons on their roster — their most recent winning season came during his rookie campaign in 2016 — the 30-year-old has been a fan favorite. In addition to his stellar play on the field, the 2022 NFL interceptions co-leader was a fixture in the Denver community off the field.
Taking to social media following the announcement of Simmons’ release, the Broncos’ official X (formerly Twitter) account paid tribute to his time with the franchise.
“For the last eight years, you’ve been the epitome of what it means to be a Bronco — both on and off the field,” the team wrote. “We can’t thank you enough for the immeasurable impact you’ve left on #BroncosCountry, @jsimms1119.”

Denver’s release of Simmons comes days after the team announced its plans to release Wilson, which will result in an $85 million cap hit for the franchise. In releasing their star safety, the Broncos will reportedly save $14.5 million in salary cap space.
Following his release, Simmons is now eligible to sign with any team. He is coming off a 2023 season in which he amassed 70 tackles and eight pass defenses.
