The Atlanta Falcons did not have a particularly strong performance at the quarterback position last season as both Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke struggled when they were made the team’s starting quarterbacks. As a result, the team has made it pretty clear they intend to bring in a new starter, and it sounds like they’re expected to make a strong run at perhaps the top veteran option available.
With Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings failing to work out a contract extension, Kirk Cousins is set to become a free agent this week. And NFL insider Albert Breer expects the Atlanta Falcons to make “a spirited run” at trying to sign him.
“As for the Falcons, they’re lurking as the team expected to be most aggressive in going after outside veteran options at quarterback. I’d expect a spirited run at Cousins, particularly with Baker Mayfield off the market. They have the space to work with, and an attractive situation to lure Cousins. And if they strike out there, I think a trade with Chicago for Justin Fields could be in play,” Breer wrote for SI.com on Monday Morning.
But whether it’s Cousins or another quarterback, it is very clear that the Falcons will be bringing in someone else at the position this offseason.
