The Atlanta Falcons selected rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Thursday night just weeks after signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a deal worth more than $100 million. But despite the pick, it sounds like the team has decided that Cousins will be the clear starter over Penix.
During a press conference this weekend, Atlanta Falcons new head coach Raheem Morris made it clear that even though the team selected Michael Penix Jr., Kirk Cousins will remain the team’s starting quarterback and he does not have to worry about getting supplanted by the rookie.
“We came up with a decision, this is what we plan to do,” Morris said according to Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com. “And Kirk does not have to look over his shoulder every time he throws a bad pass. Like, that is not the case. So I know I’m going to have to tell you guys once or twice that that is not the case. Like, we are here to go win, and we are here to go win it all. We are here to win as much as we can win.”
It’s certainly a strange situation. We’ll have to see how everyone handles it.
