Second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson has struggled mightily in his first two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts – though his first season was cut short with a season-ending injury. His struggles have led to some speculation that the team could look to add another quarterback, but it doesn’t sound like he’s too bothered by that.
During the 2024 season, Anthony Richardson completed just 47.7 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards while throwing eight touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 499 yards with six touchdowns.
As a result of his poor play, the Colts actually benched him for two games during the season.
Needless to say, that is not the kind of production the Colts have been looking for at the quarterback position, fueling speculation that he team could look to add another quarterback this offseason.
If that happens, it would obviously be pretty brutal news for the quarterback as he prepares for his third season in the league. However, Richardson made it very clear that he intends to compete for the starting spot.
“I’m a natural competitor. I’ve been competing all my life. I love competing,” Richardson said according to Pro Football Talk. “So, if the team feels like that’s the right direction we want to go in, I’m all for it. I’m competing. If not, I’m still here competing, working. Working my tail off to be the best version I can for this team. So, I can’t really control everything that comes with the NFL, but I know I can control what I can and I’m going to do my part to be the best version of myself for this organization.”
Richardson missed the final two games of the season with severe back spasms. However, he said he is now feeling “way better,” and wants to find a way to help manage that situation in the future.
“I’m telling you bro, those first couple of days were real rough, but it’s way better now,” Richardson said. “I’m able to move a lot more. I was able to do some football stuff this past week. Get back running a little bit, throwing a little bit, so headed in the right direction. Give it a couple more days and I’ll probably be close to 100 percent and back on the ground.”
We’ll have to see whether or not he can be the player that the Colts hoped he could be out of college, or if the team needs to move forward with someone else.
Time will tell.
