Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce has accounted for over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last eight seasons and all he needed was 16 yards in Sunday’s game in Week 18 to reach that total this year and keep his streak alive, but he decided to sit out for the good of the team.
The Chiefs had nothing to play for on Sunday after already clinching their position in the playoffs. So instead of pursuing those 16 yards, Travis Kelce thought it was the best move for the team for him to sit out and prepare himself for the playoffs instead of risk injury purely to reach the 1,000-yard mark.
Kansas City head coach Andy Reid had some pretty high praise for Kelce after his decision.
“He is a humble, humble guy,” Reid said according to Ed Easton of USA Today. “It’s different because of the financial part of it, with Chris [Jones]. [Kelce] didn’t want to be selfish or come across as selfish. All the players want him to play, but he just goes, ‘You know what? I don’t like the way it feels.’ He’s not into that. He chose not to play, and I completely understand it. But that’s him. Most guys would have gone out and probably done it, but he said, ‘I’ve got a lot of records on this one here; I’m not going to do it this way.’”
Kelce certainly impressed Reid with this unselfish decision.
