Aaron Rodgers remains the starting quarterback for the New York Jets, but he is widely expected to be released this offseason. If that happens as expected, one prominent NFL insider has seems to think the Pittsburgh Steelers might be a good fit for him.
During the offseason, the Steelers signed both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, each on one-year contracts. If either Wilson or Fields is to return next season, they would need to sign a new contract, but it’s possible the Steelers may not pursue that option.
The Steelers benched Fields in favor of Wilson midway through the season, dealing a pretty significant blow to Fields’ chances of returning next year. Meanwhile, Wilson’s poor late-season performance—including four turnovers in three games, which contributed to three consecutive losses—has raised doubts about his future with the team.
NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has noted that Wilson’s future with the team could hinge on his success in the postseason this year.
“Much of it depends on what happens in the postseason. If the Steelers win a playoff game for the first time since the 2016 season, maybe Wilson returns. If they once again go one and done, maybe Wilson will be one and done, too,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.
If the Steelers choose to move in another direction, Florio proposed Aaron Rodgers as a potential fit.
“If/when Rodgers is released by the Jets, why wouldn’t the Steelers consider adding him? Several years ago, Rodgers and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin exchanged playful glances. That made Rodgers a consideration for the Steelers when he left Green Bay,” Florio wrote.
“For a one-year experiment, the Steelers could do worse. Rodgers can still throw it, and his arm is going nowhere. Some would be concerned he might be a pain in the butt. And maybe he would be,” Florio continued.
Needless to say, this possibility led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“If Tomlin brings Rodgers in, I’m officially on the Fire Tomlin train,” one fan wrote on X.
“Although watching Tomlin handle Rodgers would be fascinating, I don’t think the Steelers want the spectacle and distraction the arrival of AR would cause,” someone else suggested.
“It’s a sad state of affairs in 2025 for the Steelers if that’s the case,” another person wrote.
“Yeah, I’m sure that’s what Tomlin needs. A 41-year-old diva who’s cashed and moves like he’s 60. Tomlin’s success has much to do with the culture and Rodgers is a cancer,” someone else said.
“I’d rather fire Tomlin,” another person wrote.
“I don’t see it, but crazier things happen in the NFL,” someone else said.
The possibility is intriguing. We’ll have to see how it all plays out.
