The San Francisco 49ers season seemed doomed from the start after reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey missed the season opener with an Achilles injury that lingered throughout the season. McCaffrey’s injury would prove to be an omen for the rest of the season, as injuries to stars were a common theme that completely derailed the 49ers’ hopes of repeating as NFC champions.
The results of those injuries were the 49ers finishing the season 6-11, good for last place in the NFC West, and missing out on the playoffs entirely. Now, the Niners are starting to clean house in hopes of getting things back on track next season.
“The (49ers) have fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider, sources tell ESPN,” reported ESPN’s Nick Wagoner on Monday.

Fans reacted to the news of the firing on social media.
“No surprise. I’m fine with letting the DC have a 2nd season given all of the injuries we’ve had but special teams has been bad for a few seasons now,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“The real question to me is, who beyond John and Kyle are safe? I don’t think it’s anybody,” one fan added.
“From what I remember, the Hawks’ special teams unit was highly regarded during Schneider’s tenure, but Niner fans are applauding his dismissal. Personally, I thought Seattle’s special teams had serious issues this year. Is swapping out a possibility that should be considered?” added another fan.
It’ll be interesting to see if there are more changes to the Niners’ coaching staff before the offseason is over.
