The forecast for Sunday’s NFC Wild-Card game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers calls for a temperature of 5 degrees at Lambeau Field. By the time of the end of the game temperatures will dip to 1 below and windchills will make it feel like -35 to -50. As Hoth-like as the temperatures will be, it won’t be as frigid as the 1967 Ice Bowl. Played at Lambeau Field, the Ice Bowl is the coldest NFL game on record in terms of actual temperature, a nasty -13 degrees. On this day the Packers and the Dallas Cowboys braved the debilitating wind-chill factor of -48 degrees on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. The legendary Bart Starr rightfully struggled all day with the harsh conditions, finishing with only 115 yards for the game, but he some how engineered the game-winning, 68-yard drive of which he completing three passes for 44-yards. He had just 115 passing yards in the game. Then with 16 seconds left, Starr followed Jerry Kramer for a gutty quarterback sneak that lifted the Packers to a 21-17 victory and their third straight National Football League Title. To appreciate the truly remarkable performances of the players on that glacial day we take a look back at the frozen images of the 1967 Ice Bowl.
