Down 32-34 against USC, Arizona State had the ball at USC’s 46 with time for only one more play to try and get the win. There’s only really one play left in the playbook at a situation like that – the Hail Mary.
The defensive strategy for a Hail Mary is generally pretty simple, really. You send a bunch of guys to the endzone, where you expect them to go up and challenge the jump ball tossed by the quarterback, hopefully knocking it down and ending the game.
However simple that may seem, it’s clearly not an area that the Trojans excel at…because this happened:
Yeah, that’s not ideal. That’s ASU wide receiver Jaelen Strong barely being challenged at all while snatching the game-winning TD out of the air. Game over.
USC might want to work on that a little bit, but that’s just my opinion.
