There’s been a lot of back-and-forth discussion on whether or not transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in sports, and one university has made its stance clear.
The University of Wyoming released an official statement deciding to forfeit its upcoming game against San Jose State in women’s volleyball due to the presence of transgender athlete Blair Fleming, per Outkick’s Dan Zaksheske.
“After a lengthy discussion, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San Jose State University in the UniQyo Sports Complex on Saturday, Oct. 5. Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Wyoming. The Cowgirls will host Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 PM in the UniWyo Sports Complex.”
Fans online weighed in on the shocking decision.
“San Jose State women’s volleyball chose to support a man. The women from other universities are now standing up to this insanity and supporting each other, this is how we win as women,” one disgruntled fan said on Twitter.
“This is the definition of “Cowboy Up”, well done University of Wyoming,” added another.
“Isn’t it concerning for the parents of the other team members that a male is sharing a locker room with their daughters? I’m not ok with this,” one person wrote.
“Hold your ground ladies,” somebody demanded.
It’s bizarre to see people reacting this way, considering Blair Fleming is a woman and has no competitive advantage.
