NCAA President Mark Emmert is getting roasted on Capitol Hill this week, just days after testifying in a separate, emotionally-charged case (Ed O’Bannon). The embattled Emmert has been forced to defend various organizational practices before a Senate Commerce Committee, such as the handling of sexual assault cases and integration of athletics into the educational experience.
While tensions rose on multiple occasions, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) provided the largest of fireworks, addressing Emmert with a few heavy duty statements and questions, amongst them:
I feel for you. I can’t tell whether you are in charge or you’re a minion.
McCaskill blasted the organization for multiple issues but focused her criticism heavily on the NCAA’s oversight of sexual assault allegations for their student-athletes, leading to her questioning Emmert’s existence.
If you’re just a monetary pass-through, why should you even exist?
Emmert reportedly agreed his management teams and committee needed to improve the process for handling these allegation and many other items, but the senator didn’t buy it, thus prompting the previous remark.
