Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim accomplished quite the feat on Monday night by becoming the third men’s coach in Division I basketball to win 900 games. The win for Syracuse at home over Detroit 72-68. Following the game all eyes were on Boeheim, as they should be. Without being prompted towards the topic, Boeheim used his platform to speak out about gun control just three days following the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that killed 20 children and 6 adults.
“This will probably offend some people… If we in this country as Americans cannot get the people that represent us to do something about firearms, we are a sad, sad society. I’m a hunter. I’ve hunted. I’m not talking about rifles. That’s fine. If one person in this world; the NRA president, anybody, can tell me why we need assault weapons with 30 shots in the thing. This is our fault. This is my fault and your fault. All of your faults if we don’t get out and do something about this.”
Whether or not you believe with Boeheim, you have to respect the fact that instead of making, what surely should have been, the night about himself he did what he was the right move for the betterment of society.
