For reasons which can only be known to him, New York Knicks fan Dennis Doyle is spending $25,000 of his savings so that he can attend every Knicks game this year.
It is a story which is partly inspirational but mostly bat-shit crazy.
Doyle’s resolve to watch all 82 Knicks games this season couldn’t have come at a worse time for multiple reasons. Not only are the Knicks awful (with a W-L record of 5-35) but Doyle only took on this monumental task AFTER he lost job as a lawyer. According to the New York Post’s Marc Berman, Doyle doesn’t have any immediate job prospects as he flies around to watch his favorite team lose night after night.
So, despite spending $25,000 and not having any job leads, Doyle plans to complete his mission, even as he’s been advised to call it quits.
“You mean shut it down like Melo?’’ Doyle said of injured Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony. “I can’t shut it down. I’m in too deep. I knew there was a chance this could be a really awful season. I thought they’d contend for the eighth [playoff] seed, but I knew there was a chance they’d be awful. I’ll see it through — if it doesn’t kill me first.”
Doyle admits that the experience is “tiring” but it seems like his rather insane goal of watching every horrid Knicks game is giving him some perspective.
“But it reached a point where I know the losing is only going to be helpful in the long term. I actually find myself less upset. If they’re losing or getting blown out, I only know it’s going to help with the ping-pong balls.”
