On Friday, the San Antonio Express-News’ Jeff McDonald reported point guard Derrick White will miss the next six-to-eight weeks with a heel injury. Despite averaging just 3.2 points per game across 17 games, White drew genuine buzz for his performance this summer and was expected to slot in as a starter once Dejounte Murray suffered a torn ACL on Sunday.
The news comes just a day after the Spurs announced Lonnie Walker VI will also miss six-to-eight weeks after having knee surgery.
All the injuries leave the Spurs with a depleted guard rotation that bumps Patty Mills (who was expected to be the sixth man on the bench) in the starting lineup, DeMar DeRozan at shooting guard and Bryn Forbes at shooting guard. Murray, White, and Walker VI were expected to take up decent minutes and inject youth into an older team.
The Spurs will have to do something to address their depth at the position. Right now, there’s nobody but Mills at the point. With the injuries piling up, this might be the year San Antonio finally cracks. But, if any team can do a lot with very little, it’s the Spurs.
