Back in August, the Sacramento Bee reported on a rumor that the Sacramento Kings were headed to Virginia Beach. Their source even went so far as to say an official deal would be announced between Kings owners Gavin and Joe Maloof, and the city of Virginia Beach. Obviously, that never happened (sources, right?).
The blogosphere weighed in, mostly poo-pooing even a remote possibility of such a move. However, a few writers have argued in support, mainly citing the “no pro sports competition” factor that has made the Sonics/Thunder’s move to Oklahoma City such a success (Although it could easily be argued that landing Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Serge Ibaka in consecutive drafts might have played a role).
Now, the Bee is back with news that Virginia Beach mayor Will Sessoms met with an NBA team recently to discuss a possible move. Those pesky unnamed sources have also been leaking info to Virginia Beach news outlets that the anonymous NBA team is, in fact, the Sacramento Kings (excuse me while I sit down — the room is spinning). The Kings’ only comment on the matter is that numerous cities have approached them about relocation.
The fact the Kings have been approached by multiple suitors is certainly believable — business is booming, ratings are up, and the league is full of young stars. This gives the Maloofs all the leverage they need to sell the Kings to Chris Hansen someone for $500 million — money which they could use, because they don’t really have any. Meetings with mayors of resort cities is definitely one way to accomplish that.
