According to reports late Tuesday, the New Orleans Hornets will change their name to the Pelicans, and the switch could happen as early as the 2013-14 season. New owner Tom Benson owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname — they were a New Orleans baseball team from 1887 to 1959 — and is said to have planned on dropping the Hornets name since purchasing the team in early 2012.
This now leaves the door open for the Hornets name to return to Charlotte — an idea Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has mentioned recently. If that happens, the next obvious move is for Benson to return the Hornets’ signature teal uniforms to their original city. Then all will be right with the world. Well — almost.
