The Knicks — yes, the New York Knickerbockers — are 6-0, which is the most surprising record early this NBA season. How are they doing it? Well, Carmelo Anthony, unencumbered by sharing touches with Amar’e Stoudemire, is scoring more and back to grabbing rebounds at a career-high level — he had 12 Thursday night against a formidable Spurs front line. J.R. Smith stopped partying at New York nightclubs and is shooting lights out — 49% from the field, 72% from three. And then there’s the Man in the Middle — the Man who brought attitude and a semblance of defense to the Big Apple. Tyson Chandler showed his true grit last night, taking this unintentional shot to the groin on a Tim Duncan drive. How did he respond? He immediately caught a lob on the other end and threw it down. Yes, it’s still early, but a comeback win over the Spurs on the road is a solid resume booster.
On another note: clear your Friday night for the showdown between the Knicks and the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizz aren’t afraid of anyone, and have convincing wins over Miami and Oklahoma City under their belts as proof.
