To Laker fans’ utter despair, D’Angelo Russell’s been failing to put up numbers that warrant his selection as the No. 2 pick for the Lakers. It’s summer league where success doesn’t mean anything because the talent is drastically lower, but it’s slightly concerning that he’s struggling this much. Although it might just be because he needs time to adjust, the point guard is averaging 10 points and three assists with almost seven turnovers per game in three showings.
The startling number of turnovers comes from a mix of Russell attempting wild passes that often result in easy picks for opposing players and passes that his teammate’s don’t expect coming but are right on the money. Those passes that his teammates don’t even expect coming are what make him a special prospect and will end up translating to the NBA. He had one of those passes against the Mavericks that Tarik Black finished for the two-handed slam.
A mid-air shot fake into bounce pass for the easy bucket by Black. Russell saw the angle all the way.
