In a moment of complete transparency with the media, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr admitted forward DeMarcus Cousins would play in Golden State for just one season since the team won’t have the cap space to re-sign him.
Kerr outright said the Warriors want to get him a championship before he gets a big deal next year.
Steve Kerr on DeMarcus' 1-year deal with the W's:“We made no bones about it when we signed him. This is a 1-year deal and we're not going to have money to sign him next year so we'd like to help him win a championship and sign a great contract somewhere else. That's the reality."

It’s not surprising the Warriors view Cousins as having a shorter future with the team. However, it is surprising Kerr’s talking about this at all. When Golden State signed Cousins to a one-year, $5.3 million deal this Summer, it was clearly a one-year rental on a high-impact player who was going to miss part of the season. Despite that, when’s the last time a team has talked about a player leaving and signing a contract elsewhere during the middle of a season? It’s never happened.
Kerr wants to get Cousins his first ring and lead him into a big contract come next year. It’s admirable and totally likely. Still, it’s a tad strange he’s just talking about it so publicly.
