At least Mavericks’ forward Shawn Marion is not shy about his intentions of not reporting to a garbage team if traded. The 14-year veteran is averaging a near-career low 11.2 points per game for Dallas, currently sitting at 21-28 and a full five games out of the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference,.
If those sub-.500 Mavs decide to deal Marion, who is set to make $9.3 million next season, he has said he is not interested in playing for a poor club.
“If I’m going to get traded, they’re going to tell me what’s going on and where I’m going,” the 14-year veteran said. “Because if I’m going to a (expletive) situation, I’m not going. It’s just that simple.”
It is unlikely the former Runnin’ Rebel has more than a few productive years left in the tank, therefore understandably wants another NBA title. While the honesty and bluntness is always refreshing, this public display of selfishness is a foolish way to get what he wants.
“At this time, I’m too old to be trying to go through and be a, you know what I’m saying, not have a chance to do anything. I’m at a point where I want to be playing for something right now.”
Maybe Marion and Dwight Howard can start a professional backgammon league instead.
