Referees across all sports have very difficult jobs. They are forced to make immediate judgment calls on lightning-quick plays and not miss a single thing if they wish to avoid public scrutiny. There is, however, little sympathy for officials that miss blatantly obvious calls that a five-year-old could make.
During the Houston Rockets’ 93-91 win over Utah on Monday night, Jazz big man Jeff Withey appeared to have a game-tying dunk with 25 seconds remaining. He was walloped on the right arm by Montrezl Harrell but no call was made. Every player on the court, including the Rockets, basically stopped playing as they appeared to assume a foul was called, or would be called.
Instead, the Jazz were forced to foul James Haren after the rebound and ultimately lost. Here’s a look at the egregious call:
