On Wednesday, an incredibly rare Bill Russell game-worn jersey was sold at auction for a bid of $98,525.
While that may seem like a lot of money for a piece of game-used memorabilia, jerseys that Russell actually wore during his career are very difficult to come by. According to Grey Flannel Auctions, the house that put the jersey up for auction, the green ‘BOSTON’ Russell jersey is one of only two that are known to still exist.
This exceedingly rare jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows outstanding use and is in excellent overall condition. To our knowledge, this is the first “BOSTON” green road jersey available for public sale and is one of only two known. The other one has been in a private collection for over 30 years.
For such a unique item, especially given that Russell’s place in NBA history is damn near mythological at this point, six figures for a decades-old piece of used clothing seems downright reasonable.
