Former closer and noted short-namer, John Smoltz, has taken it upon himself to compile a lineup featuring baseball’s longest names at each position. Saltalamacchia currently has the distinction of owning the longest name in baseball history (14 letters) and anchors a lineup featuring all-star Paul Goldschmidt as pretty much the only good player out of the bunch (apologies to Adeiny, Brett, Joey, et al).
2013 Honorable Mentions include: Al Alburquerque, Joba Chamberlain, Edwin Encarnacion, Darin Mastroianni, and Nate Schierholtz among others.
Long names in baseball history include: Kirk Dressendorfer, Carl Yastrzemski, William VanLandingham, Steve Wojciechowski, Todd Hollandsworth, Tim Spooneybarger, Red Schoendienst, Mark Grudzielanek.
