The only reason this isn’t incredibly embarrassing for the Seattle Mariners organization is because for once, they’re actually having a solid season and could end up in the postseason for the first time since 2001. Had this happened last year though…
So, here’s what happened. The Mariners’ Jesus Montero, who was once regarded as a promising propsect, was beginning his rehab stint with the Mariners’ Everett minor league team. Montero wasn’t even playing, he was coaching first base during the Aqua Sox’s game in Boise on Thursday night.
At the end of the inning, as Montero was crossing the diamond, a Mariners scout yelled “Rapido, Rapdio” at the catcher. Side note: Montero is incredibly slow and showed up incredibly overweight to spring training. Another side note: The idea of Montero coaching base runners is hilarious.
The scout didn’t stop there, however. He also decided to order an ice cream sandwich for Montero and have it delivered to the dugout. Montero didn’t appreciate this, and apparently tried to enter the stands with a baseball bat. According to reports, he also threw the ice cream sandwich back at the scout.
According to the Seattle Times, Mariners GM Jack Z had no comment for them:
I am aware of the incident in Boise. We are currently in the process of gathering information, but until I have all the details, I cannot comment.”
Well, for starters, I’m guessing that scout is fired. And, for Montero, I have no clue. He’s already been suspended for PED use. He’s already demonstrated he can’t really play any position on the field.
Maybe he should have just taken his free ice cream sandwich since he might be cut loose from the Mariners at some point in the near future.
