On Wednesday night, the Padres played their first home game in San Diego since the death of Tony Gwynn earlier this week. As expected, the team paid tribute to the baseball legend, who spent his entire 20-year career with the Padres and was a staple of the community even after he hung up his cleats for the final time.
The Padres invited the San Diego State baseball team – which Gwynn coached up until his death – to honor Gwynn as well.
Mr. Padre’s No. 19 was inescapable last night – it was in the dirt behind home plate, cut into the right field grass, sewn onto player’s jerseys and hats, and hung in the home dugout.
