Today, we honor Derek Jeter’s “flip play.”
In a career full of memorable moments, one can’t think about Derek Jeter without recalling the “flip play.”
The “flip play” was quintessential Derek Jeter. During the 2001, the Yankees found themselves facing the Oakland A’s in the seventh inning of the third game of the ALDS when the A’s Terrence Long hit a ball into right field. The ball was heaved by Shane Spencer so far that it overshot both cutoff men. That’s when Derek Jeter seemed to materialize out of nowhere, fielded the ball and, in a manner which can only be described as “Jeter-ian”, flipped it to home plate in time to tag out Jeremy Giambi.

It’s the kind of play that one would expect on a playground but, then again, the “flip play” still inspires child-like awe after all these years.
