We’ve seen baseball players and coaches do some pretty wildly immature things to protest an ejection – most commonly kicking dirt, spitting, and throwing hats, bats and bases – but I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed what Quintin Berry did last night.
The Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) outfielder got into an exchange with the first base umpire and was ejected following a base hit in the ninth inning of Thursday’s game against the the Syracuse Chiefs.
After getting tossed, Berry proceeded to run the bases – much to the confusion of everyone, including the announcers – before sliding feet-first into home and covering the plate with dirt. It was a bizarre sequence of events, one that Berry didn’t comment on after the game and likely won’t help him earn a promotion to Baltimore.
But, hey, if you’re going to be a troll, you might as well be a creative troll.
