The New York Mets almost had the most distinct uniforms in baseball but then they unfortunately went with something a little more familiar and conservative.

The team’s original owner, Joan Whitney Payson, had kicked around the idea of making the Mets’ jerseys pink and black in honor of the color of the Payson’s family stables. The stables’ silks were a salmon pink with black stripes on the sleeves and they were designed to honor Joan Whitney Payson’s mother, whose favorite tea dress was black and pink.

Yes, the New York Mets’ jerseys were almost inspired by a tea dress. How many other teams could have said that their jerseys were inspired by a woman’s garment?

To think, if only the Mets had stuck with the pink and black motif, they could have at least said that they had the best baseball jerseys in New York. At the very least, a Think Pink tie-in would have been completely natural.
