The vast majority of Major League Baseball teams are participating in Pride Month celebrations throughout the country to celebrate Pride Month, but not every player supports the LGBTQ community. And that presumably includes Boston Red Sox pitcher Matt Dermody, who made his first start against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night.
Back in 2021, when he was pitching for the Seibu Lions in Japan, Matt Dermody sent a since-deleted tweet at the end of Pride Month that claimed homosexuals will “go to hell,” adding that “this is not my opinion, but the #Truth.”
“#PrideMonth. Homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God. They will go to hell. This is not my opinion, but the #Truth. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9. May we all examine our hearts, ask Jesus to forgive us and repent of all our sins. I love you all in Christ Jesus!”

Dermody deleted the tweet shortly after, presumably after backlash, but screenshots of it and the subsequent defense of his words remain.
On Thursday, Dermody made his first start for the Red Sox, but it did not go well. He hit the first batter he faced with a pitch then gave up a home run to Jose Ramirez two batters later. Dermody pitched just four innings, surrendering two home runs before he was pulled.
