On Friday, June 16, the Los Angeles Dodgers will honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a charitable drag group that dresses like nuns, during its annual “Pride Night” celebration.
The event had been met with tons of controversy and protest, and you can add the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to the list of people mad that a charity organization that has helped a lot of people is being honored.
Archbishop José H. Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has invited Catholics to a Mass to kick off a day of prayer on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday.
“The Archbishop will celebrate the 12:10 Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to mark the beginning of a day of prayer in light of the decision by the Los Angeles Dodgers to honor a group that mocks Catholic religious sisters and stages lewd and profane performances aimed at ridiculing Jesus and the Catholic Mass, among other provocations,” per a June 13 release from Angelus News.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops previously condemned the Pride Night honoring and asked for Catholics to pray as well.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence raise money for AIDS, LGBT-related causes, and mainstream community service organizations. Per their website, “the Sisters have devoted ourselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment.”
Seems like there might be way worse people to be mad at in this world, but such is America.
