When John Lackey was dealt from the Red Sox to the Cardinals, it was expected that the veteran starter would veer from the No. 41 jersey that he has worn for almost his entire career, as Cards reliever Pat Neshek was donning the number.
However, the franchise announced that Neshek would switch to No. 37, but why? Because Lackey offered a Babe Ruth autographed baseball in return.

Through four starts with his new club, the No. 41 uniform has brought a 1-1 record and 5.40 ERA. While the value of a Ruth signed baseball will vary dramatically with the market and condition, it cost Lackey at least thousands of dollars.
