In a move a that was a long time coming, the Minnesota Twins announced that superstar catcher Joe Mauer will now be a permanent fixture at first base beginning next season.
The change in positions was facilitated for Minnesota this past summer when the team dealt franchise staple Justin Morneau to the Pittsburgh Pirates, opening up first base for Mauer.
This is a smart move for both sides as the Twins can get the most out of their massive investment, while Mauer can extend his career a few years longer without the everyday wear and tear of the grueling catcher position.
Mauer, a six-time All-Star, is the only catcher in major league history to win three batting titles and has received five Silver Slugger awards during his time behind the dish, while accumulating three Gold Gloves.
It has to be only a matter of time now until the San Francisco Giants move the Mauer-like Buster Posey to first base on a full-time basis, as well.
