The World Series. The Fall Classic. Where you give it everything you’ve got. Unless, of course, you’re manager Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees.
With glory and the Yankees’ season on the line, Boone has made a decision that has left everyone in the sports world scratching their heads.
“There is no scenario in which Gerrit Cole starts Game 4 on short rest, Aaron Boone said. Boone said he wouldn’t want to do that considering Cole’s injury issue earlier this year,” Yankees reporter Bryan Hoch tweeted on Monday.
The Yankees are already behind big time in the series, so you’d expect them to be pulling out all the stops. Perhaps the World Series just isn’t worth it. Maybe they’re saving their ace for next year.
Fans reacted to the shocking decision online.
“Yet another reason to can Boone. How many years are going to go by without a World Series title? I’ll take the reins for half the salary he gets and give you the same results,” one fan shared on Twitter.
“Funny ARod just said same thing a Jete agreed but we all agree won’t happen and someone needs guts,” one fan added.
“So we could only get 88 pitches out of a 350 million dollar pitcher in a WS it took you 15 years to get to?” one fan asked.
“Smart decision. Make sure he’s healthy for November, December and January. Need him for those months,” one fan added sarcastically.
“So why pull him at 88 pitchrs in a winnable game 1? What’s the logic? Yanks win game 1 and its not panic mode tonight,” one fan added.
“Then taking him out early in game one makes even less sense,” one fan added.
It’s almost as if Boone doesn’t want to win the World Series.
